ABCs of Small Business
Program Outline
The ABCs of Small Business program offers low-income Calgarians who have a viable business idea the opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to start their own business. Experienced business people and volunteers in specialized fields facilitate this program. The outcome of this program is a solid business plan for your business idea.
This is a 12 week part-time program consisting of 3 modules:
- Research on Competitors and Customers (Feasibility Study)
- Business Plan
- Business Operations
How It Works
This 12 week (60 hours) evening program runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
- Feasibility Study (20 hours) 4 weeks
- Business Plan (20 hours) 4 weeks
- Business Operations (20 hours) 4 weeks
Participants are expected to complete a Feasibility Study, Business Plan and an Operations plan during the course.

Who Can Apply?
Any person in Calgary who is interested in starting their own business, has a low income and any one of the following circumstances apply:
- Has not finished school.
- Works at a "dead-end" job.
- Has come from another country.
- Has any condition that limits employment opportunities
- A good understanding of the English language is an asset
Program Dates
This program is offered three times per year in January, April and September. The dates for the next program are as follows:
- Application Deadline: September 12, 2008
- Program Start Date: September 16, 2008
- Program Completion Date: December 4, 2008
How to Apply?
- Attend an Exploring Entrepreneurship workshop before application deadline
- Complete an application form
- Personal interview will be arranged when application criteria met
