Train the Trainer Curriculum

Financial Literacy is more than budgets and credit reports.
How you manage your money is how you manage your life. It is just as important to address attitudes and thoughts about money as it is to address the technical aspects of money management.
Momentum's five-module Train the Trainer curriculum approaches financial literacy in a holistic way addressing the technical aspects of money management as well as exploring the emotions and beliefs about money that influence behaviour.

Topics Covered

Budgeting
Features a number of hands-on activities designed to build participants' knowledge of the value and process of budgeting.
Sample budgets are included to allow participants to apply their learning through realistic case study examples. The "Add it up," activity reveals how much money is spent over the long term on small items.
Credit
Designed to introduce participants to the concept of credit and provide basic information and tools to prepare them for their own experiences with consumer credit. Both the pros and cons of using credit are presented and handouts, such as sample credit reports, help foster discussion and understanding.
Banking
Introduces participants to the fundamentals of banking. Provides basic tools and principles to assist participants with their banking experiences.
Financial institutions are viewed as service providers with products that fit unique customer needs. Participants are often surprised to find out how much the products provided by "pay day" lenders actually cost compared to other banking options.
Consumerism
Most people do not realize how much they already know about consumerism and advertising. This module gets participants thinking about the impact of consumerism, why they spend the way they do and how they can take control of their own buying decisions.
Assets
Research shows that building a holistic set of assets (beyond just the financial) are key to moving a person living on a low income towards a sustainable livelihood.
The "Stranded on a Desert Island" activity shows participants how other asset areas (physical, social, personal and human) can help during challenging times in life.
