Tutor - Math, English, or Science

Purpose of Volunteer Role:

The Volunteer Tutor assists a participant in the Trades Training program with understanding the material presented in the English or Math/Science classes

Description of Duties:

The tutoring consists of:

  • Support with language learning (the technical concepts of grammar, spelling, pronunciation, oral communication, reading and/or writing)
  • Support with learning of math or science concepts
  • Support with vocabulary learning, particularly as it relates to the workplace (names of tools, materials, processes, safety issues, etc.) Resources, strategies, conversations should focus on workplace topics
  • Sessions may be held at Momentum or at a library or community centre
  • Establish rapport with the assigned student.
  • Meet with the instructor at the beginning and then as required to discuss the student's needs and obtain resources or discuss strategies as necessary
  • Record the results of each session on the forms provided. Maintain in a confidential file
  • Submit monthly report with amount of hours spent with student and time spent on preparation
  • Complete required training sessions
  • Attend other training sessions as may arise from time to time
  • Learn about Momentum's vision, mission, and values, programs and activities, especially within the Trades Training program

Skills/Qualifications Required:

  • Previous experience in tutoring, coaching, ESL instruction or teaching an asset
  • Previous experience in working with multi-cultural and/or highly barriered participants an asset
  • Some English or Math or Science background is helpful
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Committed to the tutor/participant relationship
  • Will maintain confidentiality
  • Be interested in learning about ESL, the immigrant experience, adult learning, career development

Length of Term:

Duration of the Comprehensive Upgrading component (10-12 weeks). It may extend a few more weeks if the student requires support until he/she writes their apprenticeship exam.

Specific Time of Day Required:

Afternoons or evenings

Time Commitment:

This position requires a commitment of a minimum of 1-2 hours per week
