Work Experience Companies

The Trades Training Program (funded by Alberta Employment Immigration and Industry), is a 5 month training program designed to help qualified immigrants and Aboriginals make a successful entry into various trades such as plumbing, carpentry, pipefitting and heavy equipment technician'..

Win-Win Opportunity

Participants should have good entry level trades skills. They are keen, and have a strong desire to learn and become skilled at a new trade. There are no salary costs for the participant, during the time of the work experience.

General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance (WCB) will also be covered by the government. We are also available to work with participants and employer to ensure a mutually satisfying experience. This is an excellent opportunity to evaluate and recruit new employees.

Fair Wages are Necessary for Livelihood

Fair wages are necessary to ensure the participants are paid reasonably for their labour intensive work, within the rates established under the Alberta Apprenticeship guidelines. As part of Momentum's mission to assist in reducing poverty within the Calgary area, we also desire to see participants wages above the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) line.

Availability to Work

Trainees begin their training by receiving 12-weeks of academic upgrading in Math, Science, and English designed to help our participants successfully pass the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam and succeed at SAIT. Communication and Life Skills training are also included to help participants succeed on the job. This is followed by 6-weeks of technical training at SAIT in basic skills in the trade which gets them job ready. First aid, CPR and WHMIS certification are also included. Local employers are then engaged to provide 3 weeks of job site Work Experience. Participants may be hired at any time, either during or after the work experience, if desired.

Commitment to Apprenticeship Programs

Momentum's present trades training programs include plumbing, heavy equipment technician, pipefitting and finishing carpentry. Upon completion, participants have written the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam and are committed to being indentured into an apprenticeship in their chosen trade.
