Eddy works with vulnerable clients and has for several years. He started as a frontline worker and now works in housing, which has a direct client-facing component. Part of his role is providing case management and financial literacy training to clients.

He had already taken Momentum’s Financial Literacy Training and he was familiar with Momentum as an organization. As he was searching for formal professional development training, he came across Momentum’s Empowerment Coach Training. He was looking for something to elevate his role as a coach, and the course’s trauma-informed approach and skill-building syllabus stood out to him. Eddy’s employer was supportive of his interest in the course, and he was approved to receive funding from the Alberta Job Grant.

Almost immediately, Eddy found himself applying what he learned to his work. He found that, where it was previously easy to jump straight to providing solutions to his clients, he became more conscientious about slowing down and holding more space to focus on their agendas.

For those working in the vulnerable sector, the lived reality of people who are unhoused or struggling with addictions and mental illnesses is stark. Front-line workers regularly see how their clients get overlooked and ignored by society. Through his training, Eddy learned to offer people the autonomy they truly needed to feel seen and heard.

He also discovered a greater awareness of his own needs as a coach. “It’s really about holding space for myself too because I’ve found on this journey it’s also self-discovery for myself... what are the real barriers that I put in front of myself?”

He feels that folks working in a client-facing position within the nonprofit sector should consider taking the Empowerment Coach Training program. His most significant takeaway from the course was that “individuals have the answers within themselves.”

The personal learnings were invaluable, too. “It’s about examining yourself in the present and future... taking this class was one of the best things I’ve ever done, personally and professionally.”
