Give the Gift of Unlocked Potential

I'd like to introduce you to Sidney.

Like many Calgarians, he has chosen to persevere through difficult and sometimes extraordinary circumstances.

Sidney dropped out of school in grade five. It began with skipping school, then partying, eventually Sidney got involved in serious gang activities. This went on for many years. In 2007, his son, Sidney Jr. was born, and he knew life had to change. But before Sidney could find a way out, he was shot twice from behind, rendering him a paraplegic.

Sidney says this is the best thing that could have happened to him. His injury led to getting into witness protection, getting sober, and receiving full custody of his 10-year-old son.

Now Sidney tells his son he loves him, gives him hugs every day, and takes the time to answer all his questions (and he asks a lot of questions!). Sidney wants to give his son every opportunity, but he finds it difficult to provide.

That's why Sidney came to Momentum to learn how to manage and save his money. He learned about grants for children from low income families, available in a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). When he opened the RESP $1,500 was put in Sidney Jr.'s account right away!

Sidney wants to keep saving for his son's education, but being on disability makes that difficult. Sidney's lack of education and criminal record are holding him back from finding a part time job to supplement his income, while the cost of a pardon is out of reach...

Please give Sidney and many others a chance to unlock their potential.

With your investment, we hope to see 5,000 kids from families like Sydney Jr.'s open an RESP by the end of 2018. You can also help us pilot a new microloan program that helps people overcome barriers to getting a good job—barriers like Sidney's criminal record.

This change can't happen without you. Thank you for pitching in to help your neighbours. Like Sidney, we will persevere through challenging times and create opportunities for this generation and the next.

With gratitude and hope,

Jeff Loomis
Executive Director

P.S. Your investment is so appreciated. We recognize that you may get many requests for support; thank you for choosing to invest in Momentum.
